SRI LANKA CONGRESS

It would be fair to say that the ICA Congress in Sri Lanka held from May 16 to 19, 2015 was one of the most successful, according to comments from many attendees. The Congress featured the highest number of delegates ever, with 310 from 27 countries. There were 257 overseas participants and 53 from Sri Lanka. This figure included 12 junior members and I believe this should be encouraged at future Congresses.

The theme nights held were also widely praised, while the sports tournaments held on the day before the Congress opening – in cricket, tennis and golf – provided a fun and energetic start to the event.

The ICA made its first Lifetime Achievement award at the Sri Lanka Congress to Kamil Ismail, the Managing Partner of Gembines who has been an ICA member since 1984 and is a colored stone wholesaler and dealer. He served as ICA Ambassador in Sri Lanka in 1998-1999 and has also served as an ICA Director. He has been involved in the gemstones industry for more than three decades.

He served as Executive Director of the ICA from 2000 to 2003 and as ICA Secretary up to 2007. Kamil served on the organizing committee of the previous ICA Congress held in Sri Lanka, in 1989, and was the main coordinator of the mine tour held following the 2003 Congress in Jaipur.

He was president of the Sri Lanka Jewellers and Gem Merchant Federation, and is the director of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Assocation and currently serves as the vice chairman of the Gem Segment. He was the founding committee member of the FACETS Sri Lanka Gem Show.
